Pool Filters: Improving Your Pool Filtration

We are right in the middle of the busy season for your pool, which means it’s a good time for me to ask, “How’s your filter doing? While balancing the chemicals in your pool is important, an equally important topic is pool filtration and circulation.Filtration and sanitation are closely linked, working together to produce clean pool water. A proper balance between the two is essential. If filtration is lacking, sanitation (and circulation) must be increased to compensate. One way to be sure you are preventing any filtration problems before they occur is to install an oversized filter.A smaller filter, (200 sq. feet or less) may look more attractive because it cost less upfront, but It may end up costing you more in the long run as you will need to clean a filter that size monthly in order to maintain it.Pool filter cartridge performanceIn general terms, cartridges need to be replaced about every 3 to 5 years, depending on the conditions around your pool and the amount of foliage dropped into the pool. You can have the best and biggest pool filter around, but if it is not properly maintained and cared for, it will not keep your pool clean. One little secret to look out for is “blow by” debris. If any amount of water gets by unfiltered, you WILL have issues with algae and water clarity. Whether it’s a cracked collector manifold or a missing bypass filter – if these things are not checked every time you clean your filter, you can be fighting a losing battle. Also it’s especially important to put your filter back together properly after cleaning. If it’s not reassembled properly after cleaning, you can lose all the water in the pool, if not sealed up. It could also damage the equipment if it were to blow apart, as there is a lot of pressure in the tank. These are just a few of the reasons it’s a good idea to have a professional check your filtration system.
