Why the 28-Day Process Matters
Proper Curing
86% of cement hydration occurs in first 28 days. Rushing this process leads to weak, porous plaster.
Prevents Staining
Daily brushing removes plaster dust and prevents permanent staining and scaling.
Long-Term Value
Proper startup adds 5-10 years to plaster life and maintains beautiful finish.
5-Day Tap Water Refill Process
Quick chemical balancing for drained and refilled pools (no new plaster)
Pool Filling
Add sequestering agent
- β’ Add stain & scale preventer
- β’ Fill pool to proper level
- β’ Start circulation system
Circulation
24-hour mixing
- β’ Continuous pump operation
- β’ Test source water quality
- β’ Check equipment operation
Chemical Start
Balance alkalinity & pH
- β’ Adjust alkalinity first
- β’ Balance pH to 7.2-7.6
- β’ Test calcium hardness
Stabilizer
Add UV protection
- β’ Add cyanuric acid to 30 ppm
- β’ 4-8 hours circulation
- β’ Final calcium adjustment
Ready to Swim
Add chlorine
- β’ Add chlorine 1-3 ppm
- β’ Final water testing
- β’ Swimming approved!
β Refill Startup Advantages

Pool Startup FAQs
What new plaster, refilled, and salt pool owners ask us most often
A pool startup is the careful process of getting a freshly plastered or freshly refilled pool to balanced, swim-ready water. For new plaster especially, the first 28 days are critical. The plaster is curing, releasing calcium and dust into the water, and the wrong chemistry during that window can stain, etch, or scale the surface permanently. A proper startup protects the plaster investment and gives you a finish that lasts decades instead of years.
Plaster cures over about a month, and the water chemistry has to be managed differently during that time than during regular weekly service. We brush daily (sometimes twice a day in the first week) to knock loose plaster dust off the surface, hold off on chlorine for the first 48 hours, and gradually bring pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness into the right ranges as the plaster sets. Done correctly, the plaster cures evenly and the finish stays smooth and good-looking.
Fresh plaster is soft and reactive in the first 48 hours. Adding chlorine too early can bleach the finish, create permanent mottling, or burn the plaster in spots. We wait until the surface has set enough to handle sanitizer, then introduce it gradually. This is one of the most common mistakes homeowners and inexperienced pool services make on new plaster.
Both follow the same 28-day plaster care process, but salt pool startups add extra steps. We commission and calibrate the salt cell, hold off on turning the salt generator on until the plaster has set enough to handle it, and stabilize the salt level gradually. Salt startups are $1,450 versus $1,200 for chlorine because of the extra system setup and the longer wait before the cell can run.
You donβt need the full 28-day program if thereβs no new plaster, but a refill startup is still important. Our 5-day refill startup includes source water testing, a sequestering agent during the fill (to lock up metals so they donβt stain the pool), circulation startup, chemical balancing, and initial shocking. Itβs $700 and gets the pool swim-ready quickly without the metal staining or chemistry swings that can happen if you just dump chemicals in and hope.
Once the plaster has cured and the water is fully balanced, the pool transitions to normal weekly service. Most customers continue with us on a regular weekly plan, which is the easiest way to protect the new finish long-term. We document everything from the startup and hand the pool off in a clean, stable, swim-ready condition.
